Platycladus, a distinct genus of evergreen coniferous tree in the cypress family Cupressaceae, containing only one species, Platycladus orientalis, also known as Chinese Arborvitae or Biota forms the main cover in this forest and hence the name. It is a small, slow-growing tree, to 15-20 m tall and 0.5 m trunk diameter (exceptionally to 30 m tall and 2 m diameter in very old trees) and is widely used as an ornamental tree, both in its homeland, where it is associated with long life and vitality, and very widely elsewhere in temperate climates. The wood is used in Buddhist temples; both for construction work, and chipped, for incense burningThe Dalseong Forest of Oriental Arborvitae spread over a sprawling area of 35,603 ? and was among the first monuments to be designated as the first natural monument No. 1 in Korea in December 3, 1962. There are around 70 wood carving artwork shops near this area, forming a block of sorts where visitors can directly purchase Daegu's representative woodcrafts as souvenirs or gifts for friends and folks back home.
