In the period of Joseon dynasty, Seowon was a local private organization, which organized memorial services for great scholars and it served as a study centre of Confucianism. In 1568, Dodongseowon Confucian Academy, Daegu was established with the intention of commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Kim Gwoingpil, one of the great scholars. But this Academy was burnt down in the Japanese Invasion and in 1604, a memorial was rebuilt on the same site. The sculpture of this memorial had a traditional structure of seowon constructed in a simple and thrifty manner in the mid Joseon Dynasty. In 1607, King Seonjo had given a tablet of the seowon as a grant, which was written by the king himself. Dodongseowon Confucian Academy, Daegu is famous for its splendid landscape in the Dalseong-gun District, including a 400-year-old gingko tree standing in the yard. This academy is well preserved, and designated as Treasure No. 350.
