This statue of General Gwak Jae-u is located in Mang-u Park. Gwak Jae-u, a Korean patriot from Uiryong who in 1592, nine days into Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea, formed a militia to fight against the Japanese army was originally branded a rebel, but an appeal to the king granted him legitimacy. In 1597, he contributed to keeping the Hwawan Mountain Fortress in the Gyeongsang-do Province from the Japanese enemy during the Jeong-u-jaeran War. The Korean independence activities were vigorous in Daegu. In the year 1898 such movements began when a branch of the Independence Club was set up in the city of Daegu. After the demise of the Korean Empire in the year 1907, local populace led by Seo Sang-don geared up the National Debt Repayment Movement. This particular movement spread nationwide, however, later this proved to be an unsuccessful in its attempt to pay back the country's debt through individual donations.
