Daejeon Civic Youth Choir

Daejeon Civic Youth Choir was constituted in the year1982 with the purpose of improving and fostering youth music culture among the youths of Daejeon, Korea.

The Daejeon Civic Youth Choir provides scope and opportunity to engage the youth in musical activities. By enhancing the repertoire of the youth the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir aims to enhance youth music culture in various spheres.

The Daejeon Civic Youth Choir had members with ages ranging from eight to nineteen during the time of its constitution and lately this choir has given its 41st performance. This Civic Youth Choir of Daejeon has also exhibited extra-ordinary repertory in the special 200 tour concerts.

With twenty year's hard efforts the Daejeon Civic Choir has vitalized the culture of performing arts in Daejeon over the years has provided the talented young musicians with ample opportunities to perform in significant musical performances.

In the year 1998, Daejeon Civic Youth Choir gained world fame when it introduced the music of Daejeon at the 14th Gumamoto international music festival for youth in Japan. The Daejeon Civic Youth Choir exhibited their fantastic voices and excellent musical skill to the listeners. This Choir performed folksongs from thirteen different nations in the native tongues of these particular thirteen nations. For this extra-ordinary performance, the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir was appraised by the connoisseurs of music. The Daejeon Civic Youth Choir was from the only Asian country to participate in this illustrious festival.

From 2003 onwards the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir started including college students as their members.In fact, the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir was the first choir that was founded in Korea. It was sub-divided into Intermediate Choir which included middle and students of high school and the Concert Choir including college music majors. Since then the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir has boasted of vocal diversity and greater musical expertise. The current full-time Conductor and Art Director of the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir is Deok-gyu Kim. The Daejeon Civic Youth Choir is the stepping stone for any youth who aspires to have a great musical career.

Director

graduated from the Mokwon University and its graduate school, and studies composition at the Germany's University Regensburg. While working as an exchange professor at the USC (University of Southern California)'s Department of Choir Music for two years, he completed the PhD program in Choir Conduction. While working as a full-time conductor at the Daejeon Civic Youth Choir (presently, city youths choir) from 1997 to 2000, he was praised for his clear cut, refreshing conduction and gained reputation as a conductor with many repertoires. Not only did he guide choir classes at many universities for many years, but he also laid the foundation for giving birth to and developed Daejeon's civilian choirs through the conduction of the Daejeon Women's Choir (1998~2000). He is currently a professor at the Joongbu University's School of Music
