Mt. Gyejoksan in Daejeon, with its high peaks and small mountain ridges, is the perfect place to have a grand view of Lake Daecheong. Located in the south of Jang-dong and stretching from Daedeok-gu to Dong-gu, Mt. Gyejoksan has breathtaking peaks. The mountain is 423.6 meter high and is called Bonghwang or Phoenix Mountain. It has many fascinating legends associated with its name. The evening glow as seen from this mountain is a favorite sight of the mountaineers.

Features of Mt. Gyejoksan in Daejeon

•  According to one legend, it was named so because of its shape. Its ranges stretch out like the feet of a chicken.

•  The Gyejoksan range meets Sikjangsan Mountain at the Secheon Pass.

•  To the south, it forms a small range stretching out to Seokbong-dong and Miho-dong near Daecheong Dam.

•  The beauty of its forests, valleys and historic relics attracts tourists from all over the country.

•  There is a lookout on top of the mountain.

•  On the way to the top, you can stop to enjoy the grand view of blue Lake Daecheong and the observation platform at the top of the mountain offers a fabulous view of the sunset.

•  The Gyejok Fortress on top of this mountain is the largest of the 30 remaining fortresses built in the Baekje Period.

•  There are two hiking trails, including a 5.6 km. trail, which takes about 2 hours to hike and a 6.3 km. trail which takes about 3 hours.

•  There are rich sights to see and enjoy at Mt. Gyejoksan.

•  The Jangdong Forest, with its sports and adventure game facilities, offers a place where one can breathe the fresh air of the forest.

•  Ssangcheongdang is a guest house which was built in the Joseon Dynasty by Song Yu in 1432 during the 14th year of the reign of King Sejong.

•  It displays the architectural style of the early Joseon Dynasty.

•  Gyejoksanseong Mountain Fortress is a circular fortress and broken pieces of porcelain and tiles have been found at this site.

•  Songjadaejeonpan is a board of letters engraved on wooden blocks. The board has a compilation of all of works accomplished by Song Si-yeol, one of the greatest scholars of the Joseon Dynasty.

•  Visit Dongchundang, the dwelling place of Song Jun-gil.

•  You will find several restaurants on the streets behind the Hoedeok Water Purification Plant.

•  The restaurants are well known for their duck, chicken and beef ribs dishes.
