Taekwondo is a form of the martial art which is styled and developed in Korea in different phases of time. Taekwondo lost its traditional value during the Chosun dynasty and was further hastened by the Japanese occupation of Korea. After the end of the Korean War 9 schools of martial art were and united under a single system.

Today it is the national sport of Korea. Taekwondo is now an Olympic sport that is popular among the fans of martial art all over the world. It is now compulsory for the army personnel of Korea to master this art. The headquarters of the world Taekwondo Federation is located to the north east of Gangnam subway station. This has a tournament hall.

The term Taekwondo was officially created on 11th April, 1955. the Korean Taekwondo Association was formed in 1959. In 1973, the World Taekwondo federation was formed. The sport was incorporated as a demonstration even t in the Seoul Olympics of 1988. and the Barcelona Olympics of 1992. In the Sidney Olympic games of 2000 it became an official medal event.

Taekwondo can be distinguished from other forms of martial arts because of its kicking techniques. The most significant aspect of this sport is that it is a free fighting combat sport that uses bare hand and feet to repel the opponent. The competition is a test of the competitor’s mastery of a brad range of offensive and defensive skills. One who best follows the rule in the ring is rewarded or is called a winner. It helps a person to develop and improve the level of human capacity. The learners are repeatedly given lessons on developing etiquette and strengthen their character.

The Korean Ministry of Tourism and Culture has decided to sponsor program ‘Taekwondo Goodwill Program’ from April to Sepetember. Its main objective will be to provide the Taekwondo administrators and the specialists a deep understanding of Korean culture and Taekwondo training.
