The city is today home to a population of 2,628,000 people. The population of Incheon has increased considerably over the past century as the city rose in importance in the economic and political scenario of the country. Whereas, the census in 1890 showed a population of 250,000, the figure mounted up to the present amount in a little more than a century. In fact, Incheon is the second largest populated city of South Korea and comes next to Busan which has a population of more than three and a half million people.

Incheon’s population comprises of believers in both Buddhism and Christianity. A minor part of the population is Confucianists.
A number of people from Incheon had moved to North Korea, and to USA. Sister cities of Incheon have therefore emerged in America and in parts of China and Japan. Kitakyushu in Japan is a major sister city of Incheon, and its 1,014,608 population comprises primarily of immigrated South Koreans. Anchorage in Alaska too has a major Korean population.
