Located on Mt. Jeondeungsa, Jeondeungsa Temple is a temple of great antiquity and significance to the people of Incheon. The Temple was founded by Monk Adohwasang of Goguryeo. Jeondeungsa Temple got its present name when Queen Jeonhwa presented a jade lantern to the temple. Jeondeungsa Temple is popular among the visitors for the many attractions that it has in store. Among the many, the Daeungjeon main building is particularly famous. The main building has a strange statue of a hag with a naked woman at her foot and another one beside the pillar. The story that goes behind the making of the sculpture talks about the head carpenter falling in love with a village belle, the latter taking advantage of the carpenter’s adoration takes all the money he has earned and runs away. When his grief and repentance had spent themselves, the carpenter sought his revenge by making the statues. Another popular attraction in Jeondeungsa Temple is Daeungjeon building. The building houses some extremely beautiful sculptures. The courtyard of the temple has a bell called Beomjong, which belongs to the Song dynasty of China. The exquisite beauty of Jeondeungsa Temple’s inside is well rivaled by its exterior beauty. The roofs of the temple flow out with a curve pointing heavenward at the corners. Also worth a remark is the view of the sea from the precincts of the temple. Many people come from all over Incheon to catch the first rays falling on the roofs of the temple. Located not very far is Jukrimdawon Tea House where one can sip specially flavored green tea and savor the moments of quietude. To reach Jeondeungsa Temple from Seoul, one can take an intercity bus to Ganghwado Island. From Ganghwa Intercity Bus Terminal there are many buses available that head towards the Temple. The last destination of the journey is your destination too.
