Jeju in South Korea is a land shrouded in mystery. A major tourist attraction,
it is a laden with an enriching culture, heritage, rituals, and traditions. These
lead to the festivals the land celebrates all year round. The ancient festivals
of the land are still alive in the form of the numerous Jeju festivals and events.
The Jeju festivals and events can be grouped into four categories depending
on the seasons. The winter festivals in Jeju come first. The Seongsan Ilchul
Festival Jeju starts on the 31st December and continues up to 1st January. The
festival is to bid adieu to the past year and welcome the new year. During this
festival they pray for the well-being, health and prosperity of the Jeju people.
There is the Jeongwol Daeboreum Fire Festival Jeju, a month long festival, which
is based on the old practice of improving the quality of the graze lands by
razing old grasses for the purpose of animal-grazing and also killing the pests.
It signifies the belief of the people of Jeju in purification and metamorphic
powers of fire. The other major winter festivals in Jeju are Seongsan Sunrise
Festival, Jeju, Sung San Sun Rise festival, Jeju, Winter Sea Penguin Swimming
Competition, Jeju, Field Fire Festival , Jeju, Tamra Spring Exorcism, Jeju,
and Jungweol-daeborum-deulbool festival, Jeju.
There are numerous Jeju festivals and events that take place in spring. There
is the Seven-fairies Festival, Jeju which is based on the legend of the seven
fairies coming from heaven to take a bath in the waters of Cheonjeyeon. One
of the major spring festivals in Jeju, the Seven-fairies Festival, Jeju is celebrated
every alternate year in the month of May. Another important Jeju festival is
the Gangjeong Stream Sweetfish Festival, Jeju. It is being celebrated in the
month of April since 2002. This festival is an effort by the people of the Jeju
to preserve the rare species of fish that develop in the Gangjeong Stream. Among
the other major spring festivals of Jeju are the International Walkathon, Jeju,
Jeju Rape Blossoms Festival, Jeju, Fernbrake Gathering Tournament, Jeju, and
Yongyeon Yabum Elegant Festival.
Among the summer festivals in Jeju one of the most popular is the Bomok 1st
Class Pearl-spot Chromis Festival that is dedicated to fishery. One of the most
eventful festivals held in the island during spring is the Jeju Leisure / Sports
Festival. It includes yacht racing, wind surfing, skin scuba, fishing, swimming,
triathlon, paragliding, mountain biking, cycling, and horse riding. There is
the Buphwan Fishery 1st Quality Squid Festival, Jeju, one of the most popular
summer festivals in Jeju. The squid festival celebrates the devotion of General
Yeong Choi who protected the land against the Mongolians with his bravery and
valor. The other festivals of the season include Mid Night Beach Festival, Jeju,
Pyoseon White Sand Festival, Jeju, Dodoo Oremul Seafood Festival, Jeju, and
International Wind Instrument Festival, Jeju.
The fall festivals in Jeju include the Tamra Cultural Festival, Jeju which
showcases the folk culture of the island. One of the major attractions of the
festival is the fire works. The people of Jeju never forget to celebrate the
wonders of nature and the main festival that celebrates it is the Reed Flower
Festival, Jeju. It has become one of the greatest tourist attractions of Jeju.
Another popular fall festival of Jeju is the Moseulpo Yellowtail Festival, Jeju.
