Cheong hi Jeju

Cheong-hi, also known as Ch'usa, during the Chosun Dynasty was a major government official. He was exiled to Jeju Island in 1840 after he got involved in some political matters. He was arrested and exiled to the Jeju Island in Korea. There a house belonging to Kang, To-san became his dwelling for eight years, until he was pardoned by the king. During his stay in Jeju Island, he stated teaching Confucian classics and other forms of art. A blend of his personal style of writing and several other writing styles came to be known as Ch'usa style after his pen name. The works of art produced by Cheong-hi during his stay here mainly comprised of calligraphy and painting. His residence remains open for public viewing from 9 am to 6 pm in springs and summers, and 9 am to 5 pm in winters. A bus to Daejeong or Hwasun-ri is a very comfortable journey from the Jeju Inter-city Bus Terminal. A local bus will take you to the Poseong-ri. Cheong-hi, Jeju can also be reached by car via highway number 95.
