Jeongbang Waterfall in Jeju

South Korea - Daegu - Incheon - Jeju - Seoul - Daejeon

Jeju or Jejudo formerly known as Cheju, is an island off the southern coast of South Korea. The island’s claim to fame is its status as Korea’s honeymoon island as it attracts a substantial number of domestic tourists from in and around Korea. Of late Jeju has started attracting quite a number of foreign tourists as well. This self governing province is quite popular especially because of its comparatively warm climate, sandy beaches and the picturesque 1950 meter tall Mt. Halla.

Among the many tourist attractions of Jeju the Jeongbang Waterfall is one you should definitely not miss. It is often attributed as the only waterfall in Asia which falls directly into the sea. However this claim is disputable. The waterfall at an altitude of 23 meters is a picturesque sight indeed especially with cliffs, the sea, and several small islands offshore. The Jeongbang Waterfall is located near Seogwipo and is considered to be “Yeongjusipgeong” that loosely translates to one of the ten greatest scenic wonders of Jeju.

There is a fascinating legend about the Jeongbang Waterfall in Jeju which adds to the charm of this famous sightseeing location. It is said that the Emperor Jin of China sent his servant Seo Bul out in search of magical herbs which would help the Emperor gain eternal youth. The servant went to Mt Halla in search of these magical herbs and encountered the Jeongbang Falls on his way. Compelled by the beauty and grandeur of this place he inscribed his signature on the cliff walls. Unfortunately (or may be obviously, for it is after all a legend) the signature cannot seen anymore. The waterfall is one of the three famous waterfalls of Jeju, the other two being Cheonjiyeon Waterfall and Cheonjeyeon Waterfall.

If you go east for about 300 meters from the Jeongbang Waterfall you will see another waterfall called Sojeongbang Waterfall. A visit to this destination is an ideal way to beat the summer heat. There is an observatory at the top of the cliff, from which you can command a fine view of the sea.
