Manjang gul Caves Jeju

Manjang-gul along with Kimnyeong-gul are two of the most famous lava caves in Jeju. Largest known lava tubes in the world, these two caves were formed when parts of a long tunnel caved in. Designated as a Natural Monument in Korea, Kimnyeong-gul has two levels and consists of three tunnels. This cave is S-shaped and the first tunnel is about 50 meters long and the second one is 50 meters long one the upper level and150 meters long on upper level. The third tunnel being the longest is 350 meters long.

Manjang-gul, Jeju is much larger than Kimnyeong-gul and also has two levels. The cave is 8 km long, with 5.15 meters wide and up to 10 meters high. With a temperature ranging between 11 degree Celsius and 21 degree Celsius, throughout the year, there are many amazing lava columns and other interesting formations inside the cave. There is a spectacular pillar formed by the lava, which is about 7 meters tall and is seen at a distance of one kilometer from the entrance gate. Another interesting lava formation inside the cave is the Lava Turtle, located at a distance of 600 meters from gate number two’s entrance. This 3 meter long turtle is one of the most popular attractions inside the cave. The 7.6 meters high and the base is 8 meters wide lava pillar is formed of a lava cavern that solidified while flowing down from a crack in the ceiling. Regarded as one of the finest lava tunnel of the world, Manjang-gul, Jeju is 13,422m long, out of which only one kilometer is open for public viewing.

Manjang-gul, Jeju remain open from 9 am to 7 pm in summer and 9 am to 5 pm in winters. You can take a bus from Jeju Bus Terminal and get down at parking lot near Manjanggul Cave Entrance.
