Hwangi Art Museum, Seoul

Kim Hwan-Gi (1913-1974) was the most renowned painter and leading artist of Korea. In order to honor the illustrious works of this famous artist of modernism, the Hwangi Art Museum was established in November 1992 by Hwan-gi Foundation. This foundation was set up by Kim Hwan-Gi's widow- Kim Hyang-an after her husband's demise in 1974.

In 1930 this feted artist started creating abstract paintings. This great painter was regarded as one of the fathers of Korean modernism and abstract art. In 1950 he painted masterpieces being inspired. Gradually he portrayed Korea'a emotions in these paintings. He has gifted some immortal masterpieces to the world and is an inspiration for the aspiring artists of Korea.

The Hwangi Art Museum was designed by architect Woo Gyu-seung. The edifice has an area of 650 pyeong(2,248.17 sqm) with a main building consisting of three stories, an annex building with two stories and a memorial building with two stories. The museum houses three hundred pieces of paintings and artifacts including the famous works of Kim Hwan-gi and other artists.

The first floor of the Hwangi Art Museum houses the art shop with ties, scarves and other various objects with the designs of Kim. These are available for purchase and you can keep one of these collections as a souvenir. Once you enter this museum the immediate thing that will attract your attention is the marvelous windows. If you are tired and need rest then visit the second floor which has a resting area and from here you can have a wonderful vista of the outdoor surroundings.

Admission Cost- 3,000 won for adults and 2,000 won under the age of eighteen.
