Lee Seung-man was the first president of South Korea who took over the reigns
of the country's administration as it emerged from the Korean War and led the
country through the turmoil of the Cold War. His presidency lasted from August
1948 to April 1960 and ended in his resignation over political dissents. Lee
Seung-man Memorial was the erstwhile residence of Lee Seung-man.
Lee Seung-man lived here through the period following the Korean War and planned
out the cabinet here after having been chosen out to head the government on
20th July, 1948. A huge statue of the veteran leader was put up here in 1988
to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this election. The memorial is housed
in the main building, outhouse and a number of annex buildings. The Lee Seung-man
Memorial is located in the vicinity of the Korea National Open University in
Seoul. On the 28th December 1982 it was bestowed the recognition as Seoul's
No. 6 Treasure. The Lee Seung-man Memorial of Seoul preserves the land's legacy
and reminds us of the indomitable spirit of the land that has risen to greatness
rising above its traumatic past.
The Lee Seung-man Memorial is easily accessible by the Subway. Alighting at
the Hyehwa Subway Station, if one proceeds through the Line 4 Exit 2 towards
the Korea National Open University. One needs to go past a primary school and
the Ewha-dong Office to get to the memorial. It can be reached by a 15 minute
walk.
The Lee Seung-man Memorial, Seoul is open to the public all round the year
and no admission fee is charged.
