The Korean Republic or specifically the largest city in South Korea is famous for hosting a number of major events. The sports in Seoul got its prominence from the 1986 Asian games and 1988 summer Olympics. The standards of the sports in Seoul rose extremely when it hosted the Fifa World Cup Football in 2002(football in Seoul) along with Japan. This was the first time in the history of World Cup football that two countries together hosted the event. This was also the first time when an Asian country got the privilege to host the World cup football.

The sports activities are so popular in Seoul that the Metropolitan government has decided to organize a lot of events in 2007. This will attract a lot of tourists in the city and raise a lot of revenue. The principal event that will be held is tightrope walking event across the Hangang (River). According to the metropolitan government the standard of the sports in Seoul would rise considerably. The quality and standard of the various sports in Seoul would rise significantly when the 2007 Seoul Marathon would be held in March. Further more the city has also planned to host the world class beach volleyball tournament in May.

The city has already planned to host the 2008 Seoul Women's football international tournament, World Triathlon in 2008 and the FINA World Cup of Open Water Swimming in 2009. The sports in Seoul is raising its standards day by day by participating in various events internationally.
