The Changgyeong Palace, Seoul is one of the five main palaces of the Choson Dynasty, and was built in 1419 by King Sejong, for his father, King Taejong. It was originally known by the name   -  Sugang-gung  -   (Sugang Palace). The oldest of all existing royal palaces in Korea, it was remodeled and expanded in 1483 by King Songjong to be an abode for three dowager queens, and it was renamed as   " Changgyong-gung "  .

The Changgyeong Palace, Seoul was mistreated during the Japanese invasion, like all other historical sites, which was an act meant to lower the moral of the Koreans. The Japanese reduced the place from a   -  gung  -   (palace) to a   -  won  -   (park), and demoted it from a royal palace to a leisure facility, including a zoo, and a botanical garden.

The Changgyeong Palace, Seoul started being restored since 1895. First, the zoo was moved to a new site in Kwachon, a southwestern suburb of Seoul. In 1986, the building was reinstated to its original grandeur and opened to the general public as an historical monument.
