Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site in South Korea

The town of Goryeong is situated at a distance of 4 hours from Seoul and strewn over the entire district of Goryeong is innumerable historical sites. One such site is the Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site in South Korea. The Daegaya region came into being around the first century. The district came to be known by his name during the reign of King Jinheung but was changed to Goryeong during the rule of the King Gyeongdeok's. It flourished for nearly 520 years, located in the Nakdonggang rivers downstream area in the lower areas of Korean Peninsula.

The flourishing region met its end after the 6th century. With its decline and subsequent conquers by the Silla and the Baekjae kingdom, the town gradually trailed into the shadows of gloom. Excavations at the Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site in South Korea unearthed a number of historical artifacts.

Features of Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site in South Korea


  -   The Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site became the first historic spot where tombs of many dead people buried at the same time were dug out.

  -   The Largest tomb unearthed had a diameter of 20 m. It was found along the ridgeline of the mountain. As one gradually descends the mountain 159 more tombs can be located. These tombs are much smaller in size.

  -   Located on the southern side of the Goryeong Daegaya Historic Site another large tomb can be spotted. It is popular by the name of Geumrim Royal Tomb. The tombs lying near to this tomb are presumed to belong to persons of royal or noble birth.

  -   On visiting the Daegaya Royal Tomb Exhibit Hall situated at the site where the tomb no. 44 is located, one can have the opportunity of seeing the custom of burying the dead with living. Pottery, jewels and ironware feature among the articles found at this dome shaped magnificent hall.
