Spain - Barcelona - Seville - Valencia - Madrid
The museum was established in 1983 and it was built with the purpose of reconstructing the German Pavilion. The German Pavilion was built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. The pavilion encapsulates the Modern Movement; in fact it is a monumental work and has been interpreted in various manners and ways and it has also influenced many architects. The German Pavilion has been built from glass, travertine and different kinds of marble. With the end of the Barcelona International Exhibition, the pavilion was dismantled. In course of time, the pavilion emerged as a key work in the career of Mies van der Rohe and is also a monumental work in twentieth-century architecture as a whole. The year 1980 played an important role in the reconstruction of the pavilion, during this year Oriol Bohigas, head of the Urban Planning Department assigned architects Ignasi de SolĂ -Morales, Cristian Cirici and Fernando Ramos, the work of supervising the reconstruction of the pavilion.
Work of renovation of the pavilion began three years later and in 1986 the new building opened its door to the public. Today the Mies Van der Rohe Pavillon boasts of a wide array of works of Mies Van der Rohe including his famous works like The Barcelona chair and Georg Kolbe's sculpture.
