Tapies Foundation, Barcelona is one of the premier institutions of the city, which was built in 1984 for the promotion of study and understanding of modern art and culture. The foundation opened its door to the public in June 1990, Tapies Foundation is situated in a house designed by the modern architect Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The building of the foundation was actually the building of the former Editorial Montaner i Simon publishing house. It was actually constructed in between 1880 and 1885 and it marks an early stage of the evolution of Catalan Modernism. Later on the building was restored and renovated by the architects Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech Girbau. Tapies Foundation was founded by Antoni Tapies and it showcases his works. One of the highlights of the museum is its vast library that houses books related to modern literature and documentation on the art and artists of twentieth century.

The approach of the foundation is pluralistic and interdisciplinary and it endeavors to set up cooperative ventures with experts in different fields of learning, so that people can interpret contemporary art and culture clearly. Different kinds of activities are held at the foundation ranging from temporary exhibitions, symposia, lectures and film seasons to activities and periodic shows of Antoni Tàpies’ work. Tapies boasts of an extensive collection of Antoni Tàpies’ work, most of which have been donated by by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies.

The library of the Tapies Foundation is actually the warehouse of building. The library houses the largest archive on Tàpies’ work along with collections on Asian and Pre-Columbian arts and culture as well as the arts of Africa and Oceania, all of which had a deep impact on the evolution of 20th century art. Apart from this, the library of the Tapies Foundation also features books on architecture, design, the decorative arts, photography and film.
