Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in both size and population. It is also the capital of Catalonia. There are two official languages spoken in Barcelona: Catalan, generally spoken in all of Catalonia, and Castillian Spanish. The city is cosmopolitan in every sense. Barcelona is a multi faceted city in the sense that people of various communities, nationality and culture live here. Modern Barcelona experienced spectacular growth and economic revival at the onset of industrialization during the second half of the 19th century. The origin of Barcelona has its roots in two different legends. The first attributes the origin of the city to Hercules 400 years before Rome was built, and that it was rebuilt by the Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, who named the city Barcino after his family, in the 3rd century BC. According to the second legend the foundation of Barcelona is directly attributed to Hamilcar Barca. The climate of Barcelona is Mediterranean type. Characteristically the winters are mild and dry while the summers are warm and humid. The coldest months of the year are January and February. The average temperature during this time hovers around the 10 degree Celsius mark. There is generally no snowfall in this part of the world. At very rare occasions there might be a little but it is so rare that they are remembered as special events by people. July and August are the hottest months of the year. The average temperature during this time is around 25 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded maximum temperature was 38.6º on August 13, 2003. So Barcelona generally has a pleasant climate with the weather neither too hot nor too cold. The weather is ideal for the tourists who come from different places having different weather conditions. It is easier for them to come and adjust with the weather here in Barcelona.
