Overview of Barcelona should start with the location of this city. The capital of the state of Catalonia; Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain. Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and with co-ordinates like 41° 16' N and 2° 4' E; the city is located on the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. According to mythology, Hercules founded the city almost 400 years before the founding of Rome. However, the first documented proof regarding the establishment of this city dates back to the second century B.C. when the Holy Roman Empire colonized Barcelona. Then a small town, Barcelona started to flourish during the industrial revolution. The modern time has seen this city emerge as one of the most modern cosmopolitan cities in the world. Barcelona sits on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. With dry and mild winter but hot and sultry summer; the climate is typical of the Mediterranean countries. The winter time temperature hovers around 10 degree centigrade. Though rare, snowfall is not unseen. The summer time sees mercury going up to 25 degrees.

Because of the proximity of Barcelona to the Mediterranean; the beaches in this city are the best places to relax. With total length of beaches crossing more than 4.5 kilometers in length; the famous five beaches are: Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella. Apart from beaches, parks in this beautiful city feature high on every tourist's travel destinations. All the 68 parks in Barcelona are equally famous for their beauties.
