National Theatre of Catalonia Barcelona

Spain - Barcelona - Seville - Valencia - Madrid
The National Theatre of Catalonia is an integral part of Barcelona’s cultural scenario. Providing the perfect ambience for any sort of cultural event, the auditorium serves as a major part in entertaining the city, and thus stands as a prized possession of the Catalonian community.

The National Theatre of Catalonia dates more than a decade back when it was built on the grounds allotted by the Barcelona City Council. The theatre is housed in a majestic building designed by Ricard Bofill. The building sprawls over a huge area of about 20,000 square meters accommodating within it three separate venues – a small hall, a main auditorium and a stage house.

The foyer is a spacious area which serves as a popular hangout for the city’s intellectual community. The space is indeed a beautiful area dotted several shops separated with patches of green. With a book store, a café and ticket counters, the foyer is forever bustling with a crowd of enthusiasts. A large restaurant shares the space to serve a variety of dishes to the visitors here.

The main auditorium is an excellent venue suited to any form of performance. A fantastic sound system adds to the pleasure of being a spectator here. The spacious room houses almost 900 seats arranged in an arc to give each audience an equally good view of the performance on stage. The wooden interiors not only enhance the sound effects, but also give an elegant charm to the hall.

The National Theatre has a separate small hall which can be modified according to the need of the individual performances. The small space allows a different communication between the performers and the ones sitting below. With mobile galleries, flexible seats, trapdoors and telescopic terraces, the hall makes unconventional seating arrangements to allow better interactions between the two groups.

Another wing of the auditorium is used for hosting workshops. The wing comprises of three different zones, each dedicated to a different form art. Arranging regular workshops on woodwork, ironwork, painting and photography, this part of the National Theatre is a favorite destination for the young talents of the city.
