The history of Sabadell goes as far back as the Roman settlements in Barcelona, Spain. A little village named Arragone existed in the Roman times. This tiny village in the middle ages grew into a town named Arraona (some call it Arrahona). To cope up with the population pressure of this town, a little village was built on the other side of the river. This second village known as Sabadell too began to grow in population and by 1378, there were around 600 people living in some 152 houses in this place. Until the 16th century, the dwelling places in Sabadell were built within the city walls. However, subsequent to the outlandish population growth, the houses started to be built even outside the city walls. This century also saw textile industry first coming into this place and the prosperity brought more and more people to Sabadell. Witness to upheavals during the Spanish Civil War in the first half of the 20th century; the industries in this city suffered a huge setback but by the 1950s recovered and thus bringing more prosperity to this town.
