Spain - Barcelona - Seville - Valencia - Madrid
The Festival de Sant Joan, Barcelona is more ’Spanish’ in its nature. It is originally a Pagan festival. The festival aims to put visitors in close proximity to the national culture. This festival is held on the 23rd of June, which is the shortest day of the year, and on the next day there is a holiday for people to relax.
Festival de Sant Joan, Barcelona is celebrated on the summer solstice.
On the night of 23rd June each year, all the neighborhoods in Barcelona organize various celebrations characterised by bonfires. People can be seen burning their old, discarded furnitures and unwanted items and also hold firework displays. There are musical bands churning out their music and people tend to dance the night away. The traditional treat for this festival is a special cake made of pine nuts and dried fruits and is called a coca. There are many places that hold private parties and various celebrations, but it is recommended to attend the more traditional public outdoor festivals held in plazas throughout the city. The traditional public outdoor festivals are more traditional than a private party and they are free as well.
The whole city is found to be in the streets on the festive day of Festival de Sant Joan. The biggest and the longest parties are held on Mount Monjuic.
