El Prat International Airport

Spain - Barcelona - Seville - Valencia - Madrid

Located 10 km away from the heart of the city, in El Prat de Llobregat, the El Prat International Airport, Barcelona is the prime airport that serves Barcelona, Spain. This second largest international airport of Spain is the chief centre for Vueling Airlines and Clickair. Apart from them the Spanair, Air Europa and Iberia Airlines also finds it as an important focus city.
In terms of development of the airport it was done at the time of 1992 Olympics, for which construction of a new terminal was designed by Ricardo Bofill. The expansion project was undertaken by a joint venture team of Bovis Lend Lease, Eurostudios SA and Inocsa Ingenieria SL. Among the major construction projects there was a six-gate extension to the airport's currently existing North Terminal, a construction of a new midfield terminal of 470,000m² and a new air traffic control tower of 53.7m. Aircraft handling facilities were elevated. New car parks and service buildings for logistical, industrial and aircraft servicing activities, and also new hotels and security buildings were constructed.
El Prat is run by Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea or AENA. The airport is linked to 50 European Union cities, 40 in other countries as well as 30 domestic destinations. The airport is also approachable by RENFE commuter train on the C10 line that runs from Estació de França, making a major stop at the Sants train station.
The El Prat International is being expanded to form a structure that will allow around 90 flights per hour to pass through the airport and the number of passengers could be more than 45 million per year. This would make provision for 40,000 new jobs in the Catalonia region and interject $7bn to the local economy. The mode of public transportation to the airport heavily depends upon individual transportation than by other means as of now. However the city is planning to increase the means of transport to the airport via efficient railway tracks and services.
