La Rambla

La Rambla, Barcelona is an old street lying in the heart of the city. It carries much of the city’s rich heritage. The name La Rambla originates from the Arabic word "ramla" meaning "sandy ground". If you go back to history you will know that La Rambla was once nothing more than a trail along a stream on one hand and the old city walls on the other side. It was only in 1704 that the old city walls saw the rise of the first houses at the Boqueria. And since the demolition of the old city walls in 1775, the street began to develop.

This famous street of Barcelona, has in fact earned five different names for itself. La Rambla de Canaletes is what the people of Barcelona refer to, mainly due to the Font de les Canaletes fountain that lies there. La Rambla, Barcelona stretches to about 1.2 kilometres where Port Vell falls on the extreme Southern end and Placa Catalunya on the extreme Northern end. The best part however is that the Raval area and the Barri Gotic better known as Gothic Quarter lies on the adjoining sides.

It is quite a pedestrian dominated street. A restricted traffic flow down here is something that you can vouch for. You will find that Metro stops along Las Ramblas, making it even more advantageous for commuters. Tourists find it extremely beneficial as getting from one place to the other is as easy as it gets.
