Stone Mammoth

Barcelona offers a number of attractions to its visitors who flock in to the city to experience the wonders of the Mediterranean city. Barcelona is dotted with monuments and buildings, most of which date back centuries to give the visitors a glimpse of the past. Several constructions however are quite contemporary additions, like the Stone Mammoth.

The Stone Mammoth is a gigantic statue housed in the Parc de la Ciutadella, a lush park in the heart of the city. The statue shares room with numerous other attractions in the park, drawing the visitors with its sheer size and look. The statue had been constructed in an initiative of Norbert Font i Sagué, a reputed geologist and speleologist. The Stone Mammoth owes its existence to the Junta de Ciències Naturals, or the Board of Natural Sciences who sought to preserve replicas of the extinct species. The board’s plans were eventually realized by the celebrated sculptor Miquel Dalmau who manifested a rare expertise in giving shape to the colossal statue.

The Stone Mammoth is indeed an excellent construction as the sculptor had crafted it to give life to even the minutest details. The statue is a perfect replica of the extinct animal, allowing the visitors to get an idea of how the mammoths had looked. The mammoth almost comes to life with its intricate details, making it easy for one to visualize how the giant animal might have stomped around ages back on an ice clad planet. The statue of the stone mammoth is a major attraction for the visitors in the park, especially to the children who delight in its magnitude and look.
