Spain Etiquette

Spain - Barcelona - Seville - Valencia - Madrid
Every country has its own culture and etiquettes and Spain is no different. It is appreciated if you are well versed with the culture and mannerisms of the country. Here are some etiquettes that a traveller or tourist would require when in Spain.

Meeting and Greeting
When you are introduced expect to shake hands and also again while leaving. Men may embrace or pat on each other on the shoulder once a relationship is established. Female friends generally kiss each other on both cheeks starting with the left. Never touch, hug or back slap a Spaniard you do not know well, unless a friendly Spaniard touches you first.

Dress
Appearance is extremely important to Spaniards. They dress elegantly, even for casual occasions. Shoes are the most important element of dress.

Business dress is stylish yet conservative. For business, men should wear jackets and ties, even in warm weather. Women should wear dresses, blouses and skirts. Elegant accessories are important for both men and women.

Gifts
You can give gifts like pastries, cakes, chocolates, liquor, wine or flowers. Do not give: chrysanthemums, dahlias or 13 flowers (unlucky number). Gifts are normally not exchanged at business meetings, but small gifts may be appropriate at the successful conclusion of negotiations. Do not give a gift at the first meeting.

Dining and Entertainment
Remain standing until you are invited to sit down. You may be shown to a particular seat. Lunches/dinners are a vital part of business used to establish a relationship, to see if the chemistry is correct and to develop trust. Do not begin eating until the hostess starts. The host gives the first toast. Attempt to give a toast in return. Be brief when toasting. It is acceptable for women to give toasts. Spaniards don't waste food. It is better to decline food rather than leave it on your plate.

Business Etiquette
Spaniards will want to spend time getting to know you and establishing chemistry before doing business. Personal qualities are valued over technical ability, professionalism or competence. Appointments are mandatory and should be made in advance, preferably by telephone or fax. Try to arrive on time. Typically, Spanish is the language of business, but most large companies conduct business in English and Spanish. Check ahead to determine if an interpreter is needed. Be ready to be interrupted in between, it is not an insult, it means that the person is interested in what you are saying.
Spaniards like making decisions on their own. Do not impose a decision in direct language. Decisions are not reached in meetings. Meetings are for discussion and not to exchange ideas. Most Spaniards do not give their opinions in meetings so watch keep a watch on their non-verbal communication too. Present your business card to the receptionist on arriving and don’t forget to have one side of your card translated in Spanish.

So next time when you are in Spain, keep in mind to follow these etiquettes and you would be well appreciated.
