The largest city of Spain and the country’s capital Villa de Madrid or Madrid has a high economic, political and cultural influence. It is because of this that Spain’s capital is also known as one of the major global cities of the world. This Iberian Peninsula is also considered the third most populated city in the European Union after Berlin and London and the people celebrate Fiesta de la Hispanidad in Madrid with pride.

Hispanidad is a classic term for Spanish. In 1926 a Spanish priest, Zacarias de Vizcarra wrote an article where he mentioned the word Hispanidad can also be substituted by the word Race. The idea was accepted and since 1935 the national holiday in Spain was officially renamed Fiesta de la Hispanidad.
The ex#mayor of Madrid and ex- minister, Faustino Rodriguez San Pedro who was the President of the Latin American Union, for the first time on 12th October, 1914 celebrated what was originally known as “Celebration of the Race”. Later renamed as The Fiesta de la Hispanidad, it is now celebrated in Madrid as the National Day on 12 October at the Plaza de Colón, Madrid. An impressive military procession is held at the Plaza. The day commemorates the discovery of the "New World" by Christopher Columbus. Alongside it also pays tribute to all the brave Spaniards who had sacrificed their lives in the name of their country.
On this day King Juan Carlos, in company with the Royal Family is conferred with a bay leaf laurel by chosen veteran soldiers, as a gesture of remembrance as per the tradition. Finally the celebrations are ended with planes flying at a lower level that color the sky in the hues of the Spanish flag that of red and yellow stripes.
