Bilbao, Spain

Bilbao is the capital of Biscay Province, which is located in the Basque Region north of Spain. Bilbao is the heart of a metropolis with a population of more than a million people. It is the most economically and industrially active part of Greater Bilbao, the zone in which almost half of the Basque Country’s population lives. It is the driving force of social and economic development and it is the main factor in the modernisation of the Gulf of Biscay. Greater Bilbao’s 946,829 inhabitants are spread along the length of the Nervion River, whose banks are home also to numerous business and factories, which during the industrial revolution brought heightened prosperity here.

It is currently becoming an internationally renowned city. Ambitious architectural and general infrastructure projects have fuelled the urban and financial regeneration of the city. There are many famous attractions such as the Guggenheim Art Museum. Since the construction of this new age architectural masterpiece, which overlooks the Nervión River, Bilbao has worked steadily to improve the appearance of the riverfront area. The Euskalduna Concert Hall and Convention Centre; the underground, built by Norman Foster; the airport, built by Calatrava; the new tram and the projects by architects such as Arata Isozaki and Cesar Pelli are all examples of the overwhelming vitality that permeates Bilbao.

In this growing city of one million people, you can stroll along the walkways that parallel the river, shop at renound stores like DKNY and Calvin Klein on the Gran Vía, or explore the Old Town where you'll discover gothic churches, museums, beautiful plazas, and some of Spain's finest restaurants and most popular nightlife locales.

The city is surrounded by fertile landscapes, with forests, mountains, beaches, and steep coasts that make Bilbao an excellent destination for any traveller. The modern network of transport and roads brings the nearby Basque capitals like Vitoria and San Sebastian much closer.
