Santiago de Compostela is named after the Apostle Saint James who is buried here. The word Compostela means "field of stars". The place is now considered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This place attracts visitors from all over the world. The city's cathedral is the destination of the important medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St James which is still walked today.

The city of Santiago de Compostela is embraced by the rivers Tambre and Ulla, in Galicia. Santiago is certainly one of Spain's most monumental towns; with a particular architectonical style all of its own. But it is as well a town plenty of life.
In Santiago there is not only one of the most famous cathedrals in the world, but parks, churches, monasteries, many more monuments, museums and universities.
The cathedrals are very famous for its style of architecture which exhibits many different influences. The parks include Park Alameda and Parc Bonaval which are very beautiful. The churches like The Church Santa Maria De Camino, Church De Las Animas and Church Santa Domingo are well known. You will also find Monastery of San Martin Pinario and Monastery San Paio De Antealtares here.

In Santiago de Compostela you will find one of the most famous Universities and a large number of students who guarantee youthful ambience in between the historical walls.

Other sightseeing places include Palacio De San Gelmirez, Palacio De San Jeronimo etc.

There are many traditional festivities in the town. Semana Santa, Easter week, is celebrated as in most major Spanish towns with impressive processions.

In May takes place the interesting Feria del Ganado, which lasts for 10 days. If you are in Santiago at the end of July, don't miss the Festival of the Apostle. In August and September takes place an important Festival of Classical Music with numerous concerts.


The cuisine at Santiago is varied and very delicious. Sea food is very famous here especially the fish.
