Features of Basilica Macarena in Seville
Basilica Macarena in Seville was the architect of Aurelio Gómez Millán in 1949 in Andalusian baroque style. The features are:
- It was commissioned by the Brotherhood of the Macarena which was founded on 1595 in the Sevillian convent of Saint Basil. It was a hospitable congregation, whose aim was to attend to the sick, carry out charitable acts among its members and to practice the penance.
- The statue of Holy Mary with an expression on her face brings out feelings of Hope is a unique feature of the church. The statue is taken through the city in the holy week (Semana Santa). In the church's museum you can see her jewels, clothes and Semana Santa floats.
- In the 17th century it was transferred to the parish of Saint Gil which caught fire in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish civil war and the images (Virgin Mary and Jesuscrist) were hiden in private houses.
- It houses the city's most venerated holy image of the "Virgen de la Macarena". Nobody knows for sure who the sculptor was but it is generally attributed to Luisa Roldán ("La Roldana") from the second half of the 17th century.
- The altarpiece featuring the "Virgen de la Esperanza" was created in 1949 by Juan Perez Calvo and the surrounding religious imagery is the work of Ortega Bru.
- The procession that departs from this church early on the morning of Good Friday is truly dramatic and well worth waiting up for.
- Mass is conducted at 9a.m., 8p.m., 8:30p.m. Monday-Friday, 9a.m. and 8p.m. Saturday, 10:30a.m., 12:30p.m., 8p.m. Sundays and holidays.
- As you enter the church, you might find many (spanish) tourists making pictures and talking to each other about the main attraction of the church.
