The cultural center of southern Spain, Seville is famous for its churches and historical monuments. It is interesting to note that a hospital too can feature in the list of major sightseeing places. But the Hospital de la Caridad in Seville is a hospital with a difference. The cause for which it came into existence was very special and the hospital was built with a lot of dedication and love. The noble cause behind its construction itself makes it outstanding and the name is also very appropriate to the purpose- Charity.

Don Miguel de Manara laid the construction of the Hospital de la Caridad after he saw the vision of his funeral procession. This led him to leave the world of debauchery and turn religious and towards social work. The hospital was build along with a church which forms an essential part of the entire Hospital structure. Both of them are still in use and are devoted towards serving the poor and the needy.

Features of Hospital de la Caridad in Seville

  -  The Hospital de la Caridad in Seville was built in 1674. The Hospital built around a double patio divided by arches was built by Don Miguel de Manara. The hospital is dedicated to cater to the well being of the sick people of Seville who were unable to pay for the treatment.

  -  The San Jorge Church of the hospital is an awesome example of Sevillian Baroque architecture. The front portion of the Hospital de la Caridad was conceptualized by Leonardo de Figueroa. The Front Gates and the Bell Fry, both belonging to the 17th century are the real eye catchers.

  -  The interiors of the San Jorge Church are lavish and very carefully decorated. The ceiling is adorned with frescos of Valdes Leal. Paintings and a painted cross can be found near the Retablo Mayor. Both of them are by Murillo.
