Italica in Seville

Italica in Seville houses the fascinating Roman ruins and mosaics. Located just outside the village of Santioponce, Italica in Seville was the birthplace of Roman emperors and one of the earliest Roman establishments in Spain established in 206 B.C. It grew as a military outpost during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. During the Medieval era, the ruins served as good stone resources. The ruins constitute of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres, the Termas Mayores public bathhouse and some fine mosaics. The magnificent amphitheatre has survived the rigors of time, although of late it lay in tatters. Around these ruins, the town of Santiponce grew on the shores of the Guadalquivir River. Most of the old Roman towns are buried beneath the town of Santiponce. Visitors can the new built by Emperor Hadrian, successor to Trajan.

Features of Italica in Seville:

  -  The 27 kilometers-long Vía Verde of Itálica is a footpath along an ancient railway line used for transporting pyrite from the Aznalcóllar mines northwest of Seville to the city's port on the Guadalquivir River.
  -  Founded in 206 B.C, the Roman town of Italica was later expanded by the emperor Hadrian by the end of the 1st century and early 2nd century. The remains belong to this period.
  -  The mosaics are the most captivating amongst the houses and estates and have been well maintained.
  -  The exotic mosaics include vibrant floors with birds, Neptune and the seasons.
  -  The Amphitheater is the major attraction. Once the 3-4th largest in the Roman World, this beautiful structure still commands pride, even after it was ravaged over centuries.
  -  The thermal baths, the theatre and classical sculptures are other major attractions of this place.
  -  You can visit the magnificent place from 9am to 8pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays and on Sundays from 9am to 3pm.
