Diving in Colombo

Sri Lanka - Colombo - Negombo - Dambulla - Kandy
Ever wondered what the underwater world would look like? Diving in Colombo can give you the opportunity of taking a glance of the underwater paradise. Colombo is the fabulous adventure travel destination of Asia. Colombo has all the classic factors that make for an exotic adventure # a spectacular natural environment, complete with cool hill stations, forests, golden beaches and coral reefs and a colorful culture.

Some of the best diving on the west coast is straight off the capital Colombo. The main attraction here is the wreck sites. There's everything from commercial barges and oil tankers to small aircraft and more wrecks are being discovered every year. Colombo's wrecks also attract a greater variety of marine life than some other sites on the west coast.

Car Carrier Wreck
This is a huge wreck of a car carrier that sank in 1983. The hull is beautifully covered with coral and cars are still visible on the deck at 24 meter. Large batfish and saltwater fishes live in the hull. Swim down 30 meter to the ship's huge propeller which is still intact.

The Barge
This wreck of a barge lies upright in 30 meter and is teeming with marine life. The deck is encrusted in corals and bustling with tropical fishes. If you are lucky, you can catch a glimpse of whale sharks.

Taj Wreck
Although badly broken up, this 45 meter harbor boat still attracts large groups of barracuda, rabbit fish and stingrays. Colorful reef fish dart in and out among the tangled mass of wreckage. In spite of its dilapidated condition, the site is safe to penetrate.

World War II Plane
This small plane lies on a sand bottom in 30 meter. You can still identify the aircraft's wings, its coral-encrusted cockpit and the distorted remains of its propeller.
