The Royal Colombo Golf club and the Nuwara Eliya Golf club are two highly prestigious 18 hole golf courses in the island which are over hundred years old and still in existence today. The annual Sri Lanka Open Golf Championship Tournament is conducted alternately at Colombo and Nuwara Eliya and it is open both local and foreign golfers and in addition to it both the clubs also enjoys the credit of arranging their club championship tournaments which are open to visiting members.
The oldest golf course in Sri Lanka, Royal Colombo Golf Club is located at Colombo and this popular golf club was established in March 1879 and it shifted its base to its present venue at Model Farm Road, Borolo in1896.
Originally the 5770 meters long golf course of the Royal Colombo Golf club was constructed as a nine hole course which later on got transformed into its present fantastic 18 hole course. A spacious two storied club house with a wide open verandah commands a view of the exquisitely beautiful course and its surroundings in the Royal Colombo Golf club.
Golf enthusiasts visiting the island can obtain the facility of becoming temporary members and the Temporary members are entitled to use the club facilities which include a bar, restaurant and a well equipped professional's shop. For those who are interested to learn the game, the services of professional instructors are also available.
