Lionel Wendt, who died in 1944, was the most popular and internationally acclaimed photographer of the country. He was known as a strong individual with sharp intellect and penchant for artistic forms like music, painting, photography and cinema. Born in Colombo on December 3, 1900, Lionel Wendt had a brush with law and music during his academic and later professional life but he finally gave pent to his pent-up artistic passions and creative talent through photography in 1935. Finally he passed away in Colombo on December 19, 1944.
Soon after, Lionel Wendt Memorial Art Centre was formed in 1953. Till, date it has promoted creative works by various local and international artists regularly by hosting their works for display to the common men and the connoisseurs of art.
