Sri Lanka attained independence from the British yoke on the 4th of February 1948. It was the site of this historic event. The Independence memorial hall was constructed long after Sri Lanka was emancipated. Ceylon's first parliament was opened here by the Duke of Gloucester on the 4th of February, 1948.
