Entertainment in Kandy
Sri Lanka - Colombo - Negombo - Dambulla - Kandy
The geographical isolation of Kandy gives it a sense of warmth and closeness that is unparalleled. The best form of entertainment in Kandy is its most spectacular festival - the Kandy Esala Perahera. It is followed by a climax of ten days and nights of increasingly frantic religious activity. The celebration is usually held during the months of July or August. It is a Buddhist ceremony and includes a parade of dancers, chieftains of the temple and elephants decorated in metal jewelry. The fire walks, body skewers and other masochistic rituals of the festival at Kataragama are not for the weak.
The tourist can also entertain themselves by checking out the variety of Kandyan
cuisine which includes rice which is served with spicy curries both at dinner
and lunch. A very popular alcoholic drink is the toddy that is made of palm
tree sap. You can go shopping to the vibrant shops of Kandy for scarves, souvenirs
and clothing. The place is all a-bustle with the green hills rising within and
round the picturesque lakes, which sparkle by the starlight at night. Sinhalese
heritage is the most vibrant in the nation thus making Kandy a quiet cool town
with a charming atmosphere set against a resplendent milieu.
