Sri Lanka is the home to several national parks which are distinctive and unique
to say the least. The whole island is very green and Horton Plains National Park,
Wasgamuwa National Park, Uda Walawe National Park, Gal Oya National Park, Yala
National Park, Sinharaja Forest Reserve and Bundala National Park add all the
diversity that one can expect from any country which has a large green cover.
The National Parks in Sri Lanka are one of the main tourist draws of the country.
Though it is definitely not to suggest that the parks are the only reason for
the island's tourist attractions, the country has many more things to offer. Sri
Lanka as a country has a rich heritage and is also culturally very rich.
The national parks in Sri Lanka are spread across the length and breath of
the country. Horton Plains can be termed as one of the best destinations for
eco tourism. There are several rolling hills within the park premises which
add to the beauty of this park. The main features of this park are the upper
montane forest and wet patana grassland. This park is situated on Sri Lanka
's highest plateau. Mahaeliya or Horton Plains is popular with everyone, the
locals and the tourists. Try coming here on weekdays as weekends are always
on a rush. Another very significant national park in Sri Lanka is Bundala National
Park which is famous for birds. There are innumerable lagoons in this park making
it easier for the birds to catch easy unsuspecting preys. The park falls within
the southeastern arid zone and so the park has a dry and hot climate.
Another interesting national park in Sri Lanka is the very unique Sinharaja
Forest Reserve. It is near Ratnapura and is least disturbed amongst all the
natural reserves of Sri Lanka. The lowland rain forest is fast becoming one
of the "must see" of the tourists. It is recognized by UNESCO as part
of its international network of biosphere reserves.
