The fish market, Negombo is held every day in the week excepting on Sundays. One will find a great collection of colorful fishes in the fish market, Negombo. A vast expanse of sea shore in Negombo remains covered with small species of fishes. The fishermen use the sea shore for the drying purpose of their fishes. The fish market is held in the down town near the Old Dutch Fort Gate. It is at a distance from the main tourist area of Negombo. It is advised to a person with a weak stomach to stay away from the fish market, Negombo. The stink of the fish market, Negombo, bothers the visitors. One can find fishes and sea creatures of all shapes and sizes displayed in the fish market, Negombo. It is an amazing sight to be sure. Large and small quantities of all these fishes are displayed every where. The traders can be found seated in front of the heaps of these fishes. They can be found busy attending the customers. Some traders can be found selling one very large fish. When the customers mentions how much fish they wanted, the traders would cut slices or chunks of fishes accordingly.

FISH AUCTION CENTRE:
Lellama Fish auction centre is an auction centre which is often visited by the fishermen, small and big traders, consumers and officials of the Negombo South Fisheries Co-operative Society (NSF). It is the association which manages the auction centre. From Kalpitiya, Kudapaduwa, Kandakuliya, Thoduwawa, Chilaw, Marawila and Wennappuwa etc fishes come and are stored in Lellama.
Post Tsunami the fishery industry in Negombo has suffered a big loss. Various fishing boats have been destroyed due to Tsunami. Again consumers have become afraid to consume fishes after Tsunami, thus affecting the fish market, Negombo .
