Sri Lanka - Colombo - Negombo - Dambulla - Kandy
The island country of Sri Lanka in Indian Ocean was under British rule for a long time before gaining independence in 1948 on 4th February. Sri Lanka population amounts to 19.7 million with an annual growth rate of 1.1%. The capital city of this country is Colombo. With a tropical climate and naturally abundant rains, this country is lush green but basically hot and humid. In this context, it should be mentioned that there is light rains in the northeast during winter and fall season, but in southwest, it rains heavily during summer and fall. There are several ethnic groups in Sri Lanka. Sinhalese make up to 74% of the total population, Tamils are at 18%, Muslims and others make up 7% and 1% of the population respectively.
Sri Lanka population in general adheres to four main religion, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. The country is very densely populated with southwest being the most densely populated region of the country. This is because the capital city of Colombo is located in this region, Colombo is not only the capital city, it is also the main center of industries. Colombo also doubles as the major port of the country. The Sinhalese population which is 74% is mainly concentrate din the densely populated southwest part of the country. In Colombo also there is a heavy concentration of ethnic Sinhalese people. Indian Tamils form another part of the Sri Lanka population. They form about 5% of the total population. Ethnic Indian Tamils are found in the “tea country” of south central Sri Lanka. Muslims (Moors & Malays) in Sri Lanka form around 7% of the country’s population. They are scattered over the island. There are other components of Sri Lanka population like the Burghers (descended from Sri Lankan-Dutch unions) and aboriginal Veddahs. The Sinhalese population is practicing Buddhists, Tamils are practicing Hindus and Sri Lankan Muslims are Sunni Muslims. Of course there are practicing Christians too, some of them are Roman Catholics.
