Squash in Sri Lanka

The game of Squash has a history of 25 years of existence in Sri Lanka. Squash in Sri Lanka was introduced by the British well over a hundred years ago. Initially it had been confined to the British Troops. There had been 6 Squash Courts at the ‘Queens Club of Colombo' which was then known as the ‘Princes' Club'. Presently only two of them are in use and maintained, rest being converted to Badminton, Gymnasiums etc. However, until early 1981, the game of Squash was considered only a Social Game' amongst the Armed Forces Officers and only a few in the exclusive private clubs played it, with total number of Squash Courts in the whole island being less than 20.But things took a different turn with the expansion of the tourist industry in Sri Lanka as many Hotels have built Squash Courts and even the Schools and Clubs are now in the process of following suit. Today the number of Squash Courts exceeds 150 in the island.
The governing body of Squash in Sri Lanka who looks after all the matters relating to the sport is popularly known as the Squash Federation of Sri Lanka. It was officially formed in early 1981, and received official accreditation from the Ministry of Sports, and subsequently from the World Squash Federation and the newly formed Asian Squash Federation. Since then the SLSF has been seen as an active participant at every Asian Senior and Junior Championships in both men & women categories annually conducted by the Asian Squash Federation. It also has to its credit the opportunity of hosting the Asian Junior Championships in 1991 in Colombo women categories annually conducted by the ASF.
Objectives of Sri Lanka Squash Federation.
- To advance and promote the interest of Squash throughout Sri Lanka.
- To uphold and enforce the laws and regulations of the game as adopted by the World - Squash Federation and the Asian Squash Federation.
- To decide on all disputed questions arising out of the interpretations of the - laws and regulations, the organization and playing of the game of Squash Rackets, with special reference to rules, championships, international matches, disputes and all other matters relating to the game, and in the interest of the players, officials & spectators.
- To take the game to the outstation, in order to harness the hidden talent
- Recruit the services of a foreign coach to train the National Senior Pool and the National Junior Development Squad respective
- The Sri Lanka Squash Federation introduced the Under 9 Boy’s and Girl’s categories to the tournaments conducted by the Federation and since then the participation of youngsters in the game has been extremely encouraging. The vision of the SLSF has been to develop the game of Squash in Sri Lanka so that some day a Sri Lankan player could be ranked amongst the top rankings in the Asian and World circuits. The construction of a National Squash Complex and a HQ for the Federation has been initiated by the SLSF. Squash is certainly growing into a sensation among the teenagers and the federation hopes to popularize the game further.
