Bopath Ella Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - Colombo - Negombo - Dambulla - Kandy
The Bopath Ella, Sri Lanka is a striking waterfall nigh to Colombo with a height of approximately about 100 feet or 30 meters. Bopath Ella, the name is self explanatory of its beauty and shape. The name has been derived from its heart like structured head, resembling a Bo leaf of the sacred Bo tree. Bo is a tropical tree under which Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment. Path comes from the word Pata that means leaf. The waterspout has three separate showers that put forth a visual aspect of the rounded structure of the Bo leaf. The fall originally has its fame for this absolute beauty of the natural form. The Bopath Ella though closest to the capital of the country cannot be seen from the main road. The beautiful fall domiciles in a busy environment unlike other waterfalls of the islet. It is situated in hamlet called Devipahala of Kuruwita on A4 High Level road close to Ratnapura.

Due to its driving distance being only three hours from Colombo, the deluge happens to be a preferred picnic point where people come to relax in Nature’s bosom. One needs to travel along the Colombo-Ratnapura highway then bend at Higasthenna adjunction. Further continuing straight along the Agalawatte road up to Devipahala village will eventually lead you to the splendid Bopath Ella through a small road from the middle of a rubber plantation.

The Bopath Ella falls deposits itself on the Kuru Ganga which is a tributary of the larger river Kalu Ganga. Numerous feet below the former watercourse is conjoined by a different stream. Betwixt the falls and the joined river courses lies an expanse of sand which is the picnic spot that is so famous among the Sri Lankan people.
