Saint Claire Waterfall Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka can almost be called a land of waterfalls as this little island comprises of a huge number of the same. The Saint Claire Waterfall, Sri Lanka is the broadest in the country with an unusual compilation of two waterfalls- the "Maha Ella" and the "Kuda Ella" and is about 265 feet in height. The bigger fall, "Maha Ella" which is 80 meters high streams down to the Kothmale fall after disuniting into three separate cascades. It eventually immerses into a big pool creating gauzy veils. The smaller one of the two is the "Kuda Ella" that is 60 meter high and is located on a tributary of the Kothmale Oya.

The collective gallant Saint Claire Waterfall is near to the main road from Avissawella to Nuwara-Eliya and is visible enough from the A-7 road and Main Line rail track close to Talawakelle. In the words of H. W. Cave, ‘After passing Kotagala the loveliness of the scenery increases until it reaches its climax as the remarkable beauty of St. Clair’s Falls unfolds itself just before we reach Talawakelle. The passenger who alights at Talawakelle should not fail to visit these falls.’

It is a fascinating and tempting sight for anyone who would want to take a bath in the cool water of St. Claire falls. The place is well reachable from a declivitous through a green hued tea plantation ground. The falls are named after a British colonist. Saint Claire is however endangered by a purported hydro-power scheme in the location.

As Saint Claire’s is very close from the A-7 road and just about three kilometers from Talawakelle, people often like to take a view of the same from the road itself but it is definitely a place to be visited closely to feel the beauty of the fall and its serene surroundings.
