The nostalgic and heart throbbing world of cinema was introduced in Taiwan in
the year 1901. Historical events and issues were some the greater topics that
was portrayed through the cinemas.
The Japanese colonial era was the main influence on Taiwanese cinemas from
1901 to 1937. Some of the Japanese trends and usages were applied by the Taiwanese
film makers. Benshi was one such adoption and some of the benshi masters of
Taiwan were Wang Yung-feng and Lu Su-Shang.
From 1982, the film industry of Taiwan had to face certain problems because
of the influence of Hong Kong films that were popular for it entertainment capacity.
It was this time that new director were introduced in the film industry. Previously
the kung-fu films were in demand among the audience. Later the New Wave Films
were developed whose specialty was that it dealt with the simple Taiwanese people.
In the 1990's, a second New Wave Films were developed that dealt with the Taiwanese
life as well but the facts were not too serious. One such example is Vive L'Amour
by Tsai Ming-liang which bagged the award of Golden Lion at the Venice Film
Festival 0f 1994. One of the most popular directors of this time was Ang Lee.
Some o the great films directed by him was Eat Drink Man Woman, The Wedding
Banquet and most recently in 2000 was the Hidden Dragon.
Some of the famous directors of Taiwan are King Hu, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Shu Qi,
Alec Su, Edward Yang and many more. Taiwan is also the host of some of the award
ceremonies and film festivals such as the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards,
The Taipei Film Festival and the Taiwan International Documentary Festival.
