Golf in Taiwan

Owing to its plain terrain, there are not too many professional golf courses in Taiwan. Such a deficiency has not done much to dampen the spirit of enthusiastic golfers in the island.

Golf was introduced in Taiwan over eighty years back. Initially looked upon with indifference by the locals as a colonizers’ recreation, golf is one of the major sports among the Taiwanese. The Professional Golf Association of Republic of Taiwan organizes many annual tournaments in Taiwan.

The Taiwan Open is oldest golf tournament in Taiwan. Little less than half the tournament’s players- comprising both amateurs and professionals- are from Taiwan. The tournament goes on for four days and receives generous support from the sponsors.

Some of the notable Golfers in Taiwan are-

Lin Keng-chi- one of the most famous Taiwanese golfer, he won five tournaments on the Asia Tour and three on the Japan Golf Tour. Lin Keng-chi was a member of Asia team that won the Dynasty Cup in 2003.

Lin Wen-tang- His first win as a professional golfer came at 1998 Hsin Fong Open. Lin Wen-tang comes from a prominent golfing family in Taiwan. His brothers participate with hin on the Asian Tour. Lin Wen-tang’s maiden Asian Tour title came in 2006 at the Taiwan Open.
