Tennis in Taiwan

Tennis is a popular sport in Taiwan and is of late receiving support both from the Republic of Taiwan and the private sponsors. The brightest moment in Tennis in Taiwan came when the fourteen year old Chan Yung-jan won the junior women’s doubles title in Australian Open 2004. The President Chen Shui-bian felicitated her and called her ‘a source of pride’ for the entire people of Taiwan.

Taiwan’s soft tennis women’s team created history after winning first ever gold in Asian games.

Currnetly there are efforts among the tennis organizers in Taiwan to provide foreign exposure to the young tennis players in Taiwan.

Some of the famous tennis players in Taiwan are-

Bing Chao Lin- used to play competitive tennis for Taiwan. He represented Taiwan at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. His highest ATP-ranking in the world was 240.

Lu Yen-hsun- is the youngest tennis star in Taiwan. Lu had ranked as high as 3rd in the ITF circuit. Lu is the first player to rank within 100 in the ATP ratings. Lu Chen endorses Adidas’ apparel and shoes.

Yung-Jan Chan- was born on August 17, 1989. Her professional career has fetched her 9 ITF singles titles and 1 WTA and 8 IFT doubles title. In 2006 Yung reached the semifinals in Japan Open in 2006.
