Festival of the God of Medicine Taiwan

The festival of the God of Medicine essentially involves a procession which is one of its kinds in the whole of the island of Taiwan. The procession that honors the God of medicine usually stretch to about three kilometers and is decorated with flowers, legendary figures, statues of the God of medicine and hoards of acrobats. This parade or procession is touted to be one of the largest if not the largest in the whole island of Taiwan.

The procession begins during the break of the day and is led by a group that is usually called the centipedes and all along the designated route followers of the God will prostate themselves and would allow themselves to be trampled by the group that is refereed as the centipedes. This act is done as it is believed to driving out the evil spirits. The procession halts at some places for some elaborative rituals before proceeding to the ultimate landing place on the riverbank.

This procession is for the great mortal healer Wu Pen which belonged to the 10th century and possessed supernatural if not divine powers to cure both man and beast alike.

The man is said to have achieved a lot of recognition and there are many legends about his life and the procession goes in a long way to carry forward the cult.
