With pastoral locales and an idyllic serenity, Chiayi is essentially an agricultural township in central Taiwan. Chiayi is one of the oldest cities of Taiwan, and the quiet town still clings on to the traditional culture that marked the history of the place. The city thrives chiefly on the traditional occupations of agriculture, fishery, forestry, animal husbandry, and salt mining. Holding on to its time hallowed culture, Chiayi fosters the folk arts and traditional handicrafts. Within a circumference of 1,900 sq km, Chiayi houses lush stretches of sugarcane fields, beautiful locales and a number of historic monuments to offer its tourists a quiet retreat. Attractions in Chiayi: The picturesque locales and ancient structures of Chiayi offer several places to visit. Some of the most visited places in Chiayi are- Ali Shan or Mt. Ali is a famous destination in Chiayi. The Chiayi Park, Orchid Lake and the Chiyai Museum draw in innumerable visitors. Lantan is a huge lake had been created by the Dutch settlers for naval activities. The lake now serves as a chief water supply for the city and turns into a crowded spot of moon gazers in the mid-autumn festival. The Yimin Pagoda commemorates the 503 people who gave their lives in a local revolt. A shady park surrounds the pagoda and provides a quiet place to visit. The 87 meter long grave of Wang De-lu who died in the Opium War offers a different experience all together. A major attraction for the tourists in Chiayi is the dragon boat race that still carries the color and tradition of the ancient norm.
